This was posted to a mailing list I read and seemed to be of some
possible interest to some people here, so I've reposted it:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
As many of you will know I have spent much of the last 20 years working,
on and off, with hedgehogs. Most recently I was radio-tracking them
around a country park in North Ayrshire in an attempt to gain enough
evidence to get the cull in the Uists halted.
In the meantime, as a trustee of the British Hedgehog Preservation
Society, I have been involved with the setting up of a project called
HogWatch - a nationwide survey that is trying to establish why hedgehog
numbers seem to be plummeting (there has been at least a 20% decline in
the last five years, and in some regions there has been a 50% decline in
the last decade). For this to work we need data - including negative
data, so not seeing hedgehogs is just as important. There is a very
simple form at
_www.hogwatch.org.uk_ (http://www.hogwatch.org.uk/)
that will start the process. And for those of you interested, there will
be an opportunity to get more involved later with a more detailed set of
questions.
Hedgehogs are an ancient and very robust species. If there is something
in the environment that is having this sort of impact, it should be a
concern. Any help will be much appreciated - as will the copying of this
message to as many of your UK friends as possible.
All the best,
Sarah
But how do we _know_ that no-one ever said on their deathbed that they
wished they’d spent more time at the office?
Do they still use the old classics like formaldehyde, or more modern
solutions like clear epoxy resin?
(Sorry, couldn't resist.)
And I can't resist pedanting. Before you can embed something in epoxy resin,
you still have to fix it in something like formaldehyde. That's my boring
bit of information that nobody wanted out of the way for today; perhaps I
can provide nothing but sparkling wit for the rest of the day, to the
delight of my friends and relations. Or not.
